A new research conducted by YouGov at the request of the magazine The Economist It reveals that US President Donald Trump faces a drop in popularity and growing rejection of his economic policy, especially with regard to the imposition of widespread tariffs. The survey was conducted between April 5 and 8, 2025, with 1,741 interviewed across the country and margin of error of about three percentage points.
According to the study, 51% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s overall performance, while 43% approve – a five -point drop in approval in just one week. Personal perception is also mostly negative: 54% have unfavorable view of the president, compared to 43% favorable.
Among Trump voters in 2024, there was a 91% to 85% drop in positive assessment, while the negative view rose from 9% to 14%.
Economy at the center of dissatisfaction
The conduct of the economy appears as one of the main points of wear. 51% disapprove of Trump’s economic management, compared to 41% that approve it. The difference between approval and disapproval between voters who voted for him in 2024 fell from +75 to +66 percentage points.
Regarding inflation and prices, 55% disapprove of government shares, and only 36% approve. Even among their supporters of 2024, 19% say they are dissatisfied with inflation control.
Check tariffs
Trump’s tariff policy, which imposes a minimum tariff of 10% on imports from all countries, is rejected by 52% of Americans. Only 36% support the measure. Rejection is almost unanimous among Democrats (86%), while 57% of Republicans support. In the Maga (Make America Great Again) group, support rises to 74%, but among republicans outside the movement, drops to 51%.

The perception that tariffs will increase prices is widespread: 80% believe prices will rise, 47% predicting significant high. Only 4% believe that tariffs will reduce costs.
Most also believe that measures will have negative impacts:

- 53% see negative impact on the US economy;
- 52% They believe in damage to the global image of the country;
- 56% wait retaliation of other countries;
- 40% predict a trade war.
Third term divides opinions
Although 52% believe that Trump will try a third term, only 17% defend this possibility. Only 8% believe that the Constitution would allow a new candidacy.

The research also revealed that, in several areas, Americans consider that the Trump government “crossed the boundaries”:
