Consumption of substances by 2024 was 42 times higher than in 2021; Most users are young, man and brown

Poisoning by the use of synthetic cannabinoids, Like K9 and Spice, they have increased 4,292% in Sao Paulo in the last 4 years. This means that consumption in 2024 was 42 times larger than in 2021, according to the bepa (Paulista Epidemiological Bulletin). Here’s (PDF – 1 MB).

In the state capital, only 25 notifications of intoxication by substances were recorded in 2021. The following year, in 2022, the number went to 99. The peak was registered in 2023 –1,099 notifications. And maintained the trend in 2024, with 1,098 cases.

The drug is sold for up to $ 10 – or less – and can be synthesized homely. Peaks of use were also observed in post-foot periods and falls in school holidays.

However, the study indicates that the discharge does not reflect a general increase in abuse drugs, but the specific rise of synthetic cannabinoids.

Who are the users

According to the newsletter, most users are male: about 80%of cases in both 2023 and 2024. The proportion of women showed a growth from 2023 (18%) to 2024 (20.2%).

The predominant color profile is that of brown people, which add up to 50% of the notifications, with 1,114 cases. Then come white (26%, with 590 cases) and black (18%, with 406 cases).

The predominant age group is young and goes from the age of 20, with a concentration of 20 to 34 years.

By 2023, 60% of reported cases were 20 to 39 years old, and 26% were 15 to 19 years old. In 2024, with 60% of notifications were age group of 20 to 34 years and 19% in the 15-19 year.

There are records of 1 case between children 5 to 9 years in 2023 and 4 in 2024.
