The European Union has decided to impose about 600 products of American origin in response to the duties imposed by Washington in March on EU steel and aluminum imports.
(eg corn, poultry), consumer goods (eg clothing, footwear) and industrial items (eg steel, aluminum), reflecting US duties in steel and EU aluminum.
A wide range of products (food, fabrics, metals, etc.) have a mixed tariff for 10% and 25%. The steel products are at 25%. Extensive list of consumer goods (food, clothing, furniture) includes 25%. Almonds and soy are classified to 25%.
These duties will apply from April 15, 2025, after the completion of EU internal procedures, according to the timetable of the document seen by ERTNEWS. The full list will be published in the official newspaper of the European Union.
Dominates 25%
The 25% duty is dominant, indicating a strong recipient attitude, while duties 10% on selected items (eg cosmetics, batteries) show a more moderate approach to avoid excessive escalation.
The European Union has repeatedly expressed its preference for negotiations with the US, which would lead to a balanced and mutually beneficial solution, but the absence of progress on the American side has led to the current move.
The EU keeps the door of dialogue open, stressing that countermeasures can be suspended at any time, as the US agrees on a “fair and balanced” negotiating solution.
Today’s decision marks a crucial turning point in EU-US trade relations, tested by the policy of the new Trump administration.
