With 5,655 women, about 50.5% of athletes, Los Angeles will have 25 mixed events with female and men’s teams
The COI (International Olympic Committee) on Wednesday (9.ab.2025) Changes in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games program. For the first time, women will be majority among athletes. The edition will have more selections in women’s football, reduction in men and expansion of mixed tests.
The next edition of the Olympics will bring together 11,198 athletes, 5,655 women (50.5%) and 5,543 men (49.5%). The athletes will compete in 351 events with medal, 22 more than in the edition of Paris 2024.
Among the news are 5 new sports: baseball/softbol, cricket, flag football, lacross and squash, totaling 698 athletes, 376 men and 322 women.
The event will feature 6 mixed events in the modalities: athletics (4x100m relay), archery, golf, gymnastics, rowing and table tennis. In total there will be 161 female disputed, 165 men and 25 mixed.
Now, the competition will have the same number of women’s and men’s teams in collective sports. The water polo will have 12 female teams, same male number, while the women’s soccer tournament will have 16 selections, 4 to the male, which will have 12 teams.
For the Ministry of Sport, changes represent a breakthrough in high performance and gender equality. “It is a historic milestone for the Olympic movement”said the secretary of sports excellence, Iziane Marques. “We are on the right track by investing in the appreciation of women in sports”these.
The agency stated that changes in the program strengthen public policies aimed at base sport and high performance. Projects such as athlete Bolsa, revealing talents and initiatives to support women’s soccer have required at least 50% female participation among the beneficiaries.
“The expansion of categories is an opportunity that challenges and inspires our sports system to evolve”said Iziane. “Our role is to prepare Brazil for this new scenario, with technical and structural support for athletes to reach Los Angeles with high level of competitiveness.”
