The Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) approved last Tuesday (8) resolution that increases from 18 to 21 years the minimum age to-that is, that affect reproductive capacity.
The text still needs to be published in the Official Gazette.
The prohibition of prescription hormonal blockers (interruption of sex hormone production) does not apply to cases of early puberty or other endocrine diseases, only to those involving children and adolescents who want to do the gender transition.
The approved resolution also increases from 16 to 18 years the minimum age to start – the replacement of sex hormones for feminization or masculinization, according to gender identity.
In the case of surgical procedures for gender reassignation, age was maintained in 18 years, except for those with potential sterilizing effect, whose minimum age is 21 years.
To support this change, the CFM used a law passed in 2022 by Congress that decreased by 25 to 21 years the minimum age to perform tubal ligation or vasectomy in Brazil.
The Resolution also determines that the services that perform these surgical procedures must register patients and ensure the proper availability of information to the regional councils of local medicine.
The text also states that transgender people who retain original biological sex should seek preventive or therapeutic care from the right expert – or that is, transgender men who maintain female biological organs should consult with a gynecologist and transgender women with male biological organs, with urologist.
CFM advisers argue that the changes were based on measures already adopted abroad and cite the case of the United Kingdom, which limited gender change to minors after questioning the benefit of treatments.
CFM resolution adds to others of the Council criticized by conservatism. In April last year, the entity approved a resolution that caused by rape.
During the covid-19 pandemic, the board has published that it finds necessary against the disease, including the so-called “covid kit”, with chloroquine and Ivermectin, which were not effective against coronavirus.
