The Conmebol Libertadores Cup provides for punishments in case of cancellation of a match, exactly what happened in the game against Fortaleza, on Thursday (10).
According to the Libertadores regulation, the sanctions for the cancellation of a game are quite strict. The biggest risk to Colo-Colo is the disqualification and possible banishment of Libertadores, which would represent an important spot in the club’s history, precisely the week before the institution’s centenary.
“The disciplinary commission of Conmebol will determine the value of damage caused or financial losses, after considering the circumstances of each specific case and the available evidence,” says the regulation.
The document also adds: “The club in question can be disqualified from the upcoming tournaments organized by Conmebol. Conmebol may adopt other appropriate measures, such as the club’s suspension of any other competition organized by the entity.”

According to local authorities, the incidents began even before the initial whistle. They tried to force the entrance to the stadium, causing a collapse in part of the safety structures. During the confusion, and preliminary investigations point to the possible participation of a police car, which would have run over the victims after the fall of a metal fence. The second line of investigation considers that young people were victims of a human avalanche.
“We are analyzing all hypotheses. The scenario is complex,” said Francisco Mores, a prosecutor responsible for the case. According to him, the possibility that the car contributed to the worsening of the tragedy is not ruled out. The Chilean Police Traffic Accident Investigation Section conducted expertise on site to determine the dynamics of what happened.
The victims are an officially unidentified young man and an 18 -year -old who was rescued but died at the clinic to where he was taken.
In an official note, it lamented the deaths and assured that it closely follows the investigations. “We express our solidarity to the families of the victims and reiterate our commitment to the safety of fans and professionals involved in the competitions,” said the entity.
