It is heavy, dense and growing vegetables in it is almost a miracle. Therefore, many gardeners hate clay soil. But moving for her? You’d be fools. And it’s not needed at all. “It is difficult to deal with clay before planting, but it pays off in the future,” says Jana Bucharová in the podcast counseling center.

It is not that it does not grow in it. The clay soil is strictly testified to guests, floxles, scrap or helmets. And it is beautiful in the entire carpet of daisy. But growing vegetables in such a flower bed and sometimes some common types of herbs are almost punished. It retains much more water than you would like, so it is unnecessarily heavy for most plants. Even with clay soil, however, you can work. When you know how to do it.
Do you recognize her?
If you are not sure if you really have clay soil on the plot, there is a small TES, which has already been recommended several times in our counseling center Receptář magazine, Jana Bucharová. “Just take a small piece of soil in the damp hand that fits in the palm,” he describes. “Then try to model the roller and possibly bend it slightly. If it is possible and the roller will not crush or break, you have almost confidently clay soil.”

If you decide to improve the properties of previously established beds, prepare for a proper toil. The soil should be digested and lightened or supplemented with nutrients. “But you have to go deep. For herbs and vegetables at least half a meter,” recommends Jana Bucharová.
In addition, if you live on a very waterlogged area, for example with a large number of underground springs, further adjustment may be required. “In this case, sometimes the drainage pipes are placed, which will take part of the moisture away and solve the waterlogging of roads and a lot of stressed areas,” says the expert.
Or try the other way around
But that you do not want to dig beds at all or, for example, to lay tubes? Then simply go to the height. “Take advantage of raised flower beds that are so popular today AI finished on the market from different materials and in different styles and sizes,” recommends the expert.
And the vegetables are grown almost alone. You can also build a rock garden or a double -sided dry wall. Both will bring a little “dry” beds with lighter soil to the garden, and so the space for plants that you would not have succeeded.
