President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) confirmed on Thursday (10) the choice of federal deputy Pedro Lucas (Union-MA) for the Ministry of Communications. The decision was made after a meeting at the Planalto Palace.
Participated in the meeting with Lula: Senate President David Alcolumbre (Union-AP), the president of União Brasil, Antonio Rueda, the future minister, and the ministers Rui Costa, from the Civil House, and Gleisi Hoffmann, of institutional relations.
The information about Pedro Lucas’s acceptance was announced by Gleisi at a news conference after the meeting. The parliamentarian must take over the portfolio after the Easter holiday, which is on April 20, according to the minister.
Who is Pedro Lucas
Since February 2025, the deputy has been the leader of União in the House. Earlier, he was vice-leader of the Government in the National Congress, a position he held for two years since February 2023.
Throughout the term, he participated in special and external committees, such as the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) of oil spill in the Northeast, between 2019 and 2021.
Pedro Lucas approached President Lula on a recent trip of the presidents of the Legislature and leaders invited to Asia.
He was with an entourage of ministers and parliamentarians, such as Senate President and his acronym colleague, David Alcolumbre (Union-AP), with the objective of “further strengthening ties and expanding investment possibilities for Brazil”, as stated in a publication on social networks.
Juscelino denounced by PGR
The predecessor in the portfolio, Juscelino Filho, asked for misappropriation of parliamentary amendments via São Francisco and Parnaíba Valleys Company (Codevasf).
According to investigations, Juscelino, when he was a federal deputy, would have allocated amendments to the municipality of Vitorino Freire (MA), whose mayor, at the time, was his sister.
It is also suspected that Juscelino Filho received bribes from facade companies that would have been hired to perform paving works.
He was the Prime Minister of the Lula government to be formally accused by PGR.
He can become a defendant for crimes such as passive corruption; money laundering; criminal organization; ideological falsehood; fraud to bidding and violation of confidentiality in bidding. If the complaint is accepted, Juscelino will be tried by the First Class of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
