Italy has taken 40 unsuccessful asylum seekers to the Albanian Location Center, waiting for repatriation to their homes.

On Friday, the Italian authorities were transferred by 40 unsuccessful asylum seekers to the Migrants’ Location Center in Albania under the Rome administration. There they wait for repatriation to their homes. The Italian government has not published their nationality or other details, TASR writes, according to AP and Reuters report.

The ship with migrants from the Italian port of Brindisi arrived in the Albanian port of Shengjin in a few hours, approximately 65 kilometers northeast of Tirana. Migrants on buses and minivans, under strict security measures, were transferred to the center of Shengjin, managed by the Italian authorities. From there they move them to the second center in Gyader, also managed by Rome.

The length of detention is unclear

It is not clear how long migrants will stay in Albania. According to Italian laws, asylum seekers may be unsuccessful for up to 18 months.

Facilities in both Albanian cities were originally built for the processing of asylum applications of people who were detained in the Mediterranean. Rome tried to discourage future asylum seekers from attempts to get to Italy. However, since they were opened in October, the Italian courts have prevented the authorities from their use, and small groups of migrants who were sent there returned to Italy.

New seizure measures

The Italian right -wing government of Prime Minister Giorgie Meloni was approved by a decree last month to use Albania as a coverage for people whose asylum applications have already been rejected.
