Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah ended up months of speculation about his future by signing on Friday (11) a new two-year contract with Liverpool, leader of Premier League, which will lead him to complete a decade at the English club.
“Of course I’m very excited. We have a great team now. Before we had a great team too. But I signed because I believe we have the chance to win other trophies,” Salah said in a statement released by the club.
“It’s great, I had my best years here. I played for eight years, I hope to get to ten. Taking advantage of my life here, enjoying my football. I had the best years of my career,” he added.
Liverpool did not detail the duration of the new contract in the statement. But Salah gave the information by claiming that his wife and children “were very happy that we will be for two more years.”
The 32 -year -old striker has scored 243 goals in 394 Reds matches since he arrived at the club from Roma in 2017. The Egyptian is the third largest top scorer in the club’s history.
Salah was one of the protagonists of Liverpool’s return to European football spotlight in 2019, when the club won its first champions league in 15 years. A year later, he won his first English Championship title in 30 years.
Eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain in this year’s Champions League round of 16, Liverpool seeks its 20th English title with the help of the striker, who scored 27 goals and gave 17 assists at Premier League this season.
The Merseyside club has 11 points of advantage for vice-leader Arsenal just seven rounds from the end of the championship.
Salah scored 32 goals in all competitions and gave 22 assists. “He has shown this club for many years how valuable it is,” said coach Arne Slot, who arrived this season to replace the iconic Jürgen Klopp at a press conference.
“Like all our fans and their teammates, we are very happy that he has renewed for two years,” he added.
Slot now “waits” that Salah, who has not scored goals in six of his last seven matches, “Show on Sunday [contra o West Ham] how important it has been for us this season. “
With 103 games played for the national team, the Egyptian also won a Cup of England (2022), two English League Cup (2022 and 2024) and a Club World Cup (2019).
Covered by major European clubs, Salah would have been the target of PSG and Saudi football, according to some press reports.
The player himself has fueled speculation in recent months, expressing frustration with the progress of negotiations and stating that he is “probably more willing to come out than to stay.”
After Salah, Liverpool hopes to ensure contract extensions for two of his other pillars, 33-year-old Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk and English defender Alexander-Arnold, 26.
