BRICS launches contest for startups led by women

Initiative of the Brazilian presidency wants to boost innovation and expand the impact of female businesses on the block

BRICS’s Brazilian presidency launched a contest to boost female entrepreneurship as a motor of economic development and sustainable innovation. The initiative seeks to give business visibility led by women who offer practical and innovative solutions to challenges faced by their communities and markets.

The collaboration of the (Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service), the (National Confederation of Industry) and the (Block Business Women Alliance).

The expectation is to attract up to 2,000 registrations. The contest is open to startups led by women from the bloc countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the United Arabic) and partners (Belarusia, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan).

Startups of Kyrguistan, Mozambique, Lesoto, Zambia and Zimbabwe can also participate, as long as they operate in the BRICS markets or have consistent expansion plans for these regions.

Registration is open until May 4, 2025 and must be made through the Brazilian Presidency Officer of the Block.

The initiative is in tune with the priorities established by the Brazilian Presidency of BRICS, focused on economic integration, expansion of strategic partnerships and promoting actions that generate lasting social and economic impact.

Categories

Candidates will be able to compete in 6 main categories, which reflect strategic areas for sustainable development and the economic inclusion of BRICS countries. The contest is divided into 6 areas: health and well-being; Agriculture and Food Security; skill education and development; Energy, infrastructure and mobility; Trade, service and digital transformation; and sustainable development and climate solutions.

This year, Sebrae is one of those responsible for the organization. With the institution’s support, the BRICS Women’s Startups Contest 2025 seeks to create a favorable environment for entrepreneurs to connect with investors, accelerators and global innovation ecosystems. The purpose is to encourage the growth of these businesses and promote their access to new markets.

Award

The 18 finalists will participate in a technical mission to Rio de Janeiro, from July 1st to 8 this year, with all covered expenses, including airline tickets, lodging and a cash amount. During the week, they will be able to learn about innovation hubs, present their projects to investors and business leaders and participate in the award ceremony.

The contest reinforces Brazil’s commitment to promote female entrepreneurship and facilitate access to global markets for startups and innovative small businesses. Discussions within BRICS have highlighted the importance of technological cooperation and productive inclusion for sustainable growth.
