Resident for more than five decades of the Chico Mendes agro -extractive project, in Xapuri (AC), Francisco Teixeira Mendes, cousin of the rubber tree leader who gives name to the settlement is one of 223 families of Acre who benefited from the credit installation in the Environmental Recovery Modality, initiative of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra) that releases R $ 8,000 per family nucleus and production actions agroecological.
In all, R $ 1.78 million were invested in this modality in the state alone. With the funds, Francisco Mendes applied R $ 32 thousand in the planting of native trees, such as Sumaúma and Cedro.

“This reforestation I am doing is part of the history of Chico Mendes,” he says, noting that he continues to take care of the forest, still making income with her standing.
The initiative is part of an investment from the federal government, which allocated R $ 9 million to support 858 land reform families in 36 settlements from 11 municipalities of Acre.
The transfers started in March 2025 and are mainly aimed at families living in Sustainable Development Projects (PDS), agro -extractive settlement projects (PAE) and Extractive Reserves recognized by Incra.
In addition to helping the environmental recovery of degraded areas, credit aims to strengthen the permanence of communities in the forest, ensuring decent and sustainable conditions of life in the countryside. Among the projects served are PDS Croa, PAE Ecuador and Paraná dos Mouras Settlement, all in Cruzeiro do Sul, as well as the Cazumbá-iracema extractive reserve in Sena Madureira, and Pae Chico Mendes himself in Xapuri.
