Germany: On May 6th the election of Friedrich Mertz as Chancellor

His election by the federal parliament as a new Chancellor is scheduled for May 6, Tagesspiegel, citing government sources, is reported.

According to the report, future government partners, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have already agreed on the date and the preparation is underway.

In addition, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier received earlier today Mr Mertz and two SPD presidents Lars Klingbil and Zaskia were also in order to inform him formally of the agreement.

Prior to the election of the Chancellor, however, SPD members should vote in order to approve their party’s participation in the government coalition under the leader of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU) Friedrich Mertz.
