In the district of Stará Ľubovňa there are currently approximately 50 individuals of the brown bear. This is a 100 % increase in the last five years. After a crisis staff meeting, the District Office (OU) in Stará Ľubovňa informed about it on the social network.
The meeting at the OU took place in connection with the emergency situation announced by the Government of the Slovak Republic on April 2, 2025 Due to the increased incidence of brown bear in several regions.
As stated by the OU, while in the past the district of Stará Ľubovňa was just passing through, today there are favorable conditions for permanent residence. “Ten risky individuals have been identified in the past to approach human dwellings. In recent days, the occurrence of a bear has been confirmed in the villages of Jakubany and Orlov,” informs the OU.
At the same time, it warns people that they move ideally in groups and daylight when hiking, harvesting forest fruits or walks. They avoided densely overgrown and silent areas. They did not leave food or garbage in the forest, they can attract wildlife. When the bear is raised, it is necessary to keep calm and slowly move away, the OU recalled.
