Former President Jair Bolsonaro underwent 11-hour surgery on Sunday (13) in Brasilia to treat an intestinal obstruction.
The procedure, performed at DF Star Hospital, involved the clearance of intestinal flow and reconstruction of the abdominal wall, due to complications resulting from multiple surgeries performed since the attack suffered in 2018.
According to former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro, the operation has been successfully completed, and the former president is already in the process of recovery.
In a publication on social networks, Michelle thanked the support received and highlighted the importance of prayers and messages of solidarity during this delicate moment.
Bolsonaro began to feel abdominal pain last Friday (11), while participating in a political act in Rio Grande do Norte.
After being treated in a hospital in the city of Santa Cruz, he was transferred to Natal and later to Brasilia on Saturday (12), where the medical team diagnosed the need for surgical intervention.

The operation was considered extensive and delicate due to the history of multiple abdominal manipulations performed over the last few years.
According to doctors, the former president’s abdomen has scars and adhesions that make it difficult for the normal functioning of the digestive system.
Intestinal obstruction, which motivated hospitalization, is a condition that can have several causes, such as adhesions, tumors and hernias.

In the case of Bolsonaro, the adhesions formed by scars from previous surgeries were identified as the main factor.
The exploiting laparotomy held on Sunday aimed to detach these adhesions and restore intestinal flow.
In addition, it was necessary to replace a previously deployed screen to reinforce the abdominal muscles.

The procedure was conducted by a specialized team, led by doctor Claudio Birolini, who accompanies the clinical picture of the former president.
The decision to perform surgery in Brasilia, not in São Paulo, generated debates among Bolsonaro counselors.
Some argued that the procedure was conducted by the team of doctor Antonio Luiz Macedo, who has been with the former president since the 2018 attack. However, Michelle Bolsonaro chose to maintain treatment in the federal capital under the care of Birolini, an abdominal wall expert.
