Before we still start the mower, we must thoroughly assess the condition of the grass. This will allow us to adapt the mowing technique and avoid errors that could harm the grass.
The first mowing of the lawn after winter. When to mow the grass in spring?
The date of the first mowing depends on the weather conditions and the region in which we live. It usually falls on April, when the air temperature lasts above 7-10 degrees Celsius for several days, and the grass begins to grow intensively. In addition to temperature, the height of the grass is also the indicator. We carry out the first mowing when the grass reaches a height of about 8-10 cm. The first mowing should be higher than usual. In the case of commercial lawns, the recommended mowing height is 5-6 cm, in the case of decorative lawns-3-4 cm. The next ones should shorten the blades by a maximum of 1/3 of the lawn height. When it comes to mowing frequencies, this should be done regularly at intervals of 7-10 days. It is also important to mow the grass in different directions and not forget to water it after each mowing. If we want the lawn to look beautiful, we avoid mowing after frosts. Young grass shoots are very sensitive to low temperatures, so mowing immediately after frosts can damage them and slow down growth. We also avoid mowing on rainy days. Wet blades can cause uneven cutting and damage to the roots and the mower. However, mowing in full sun can dry the lawn, so the grass is best shortened on cloudy, but rainless days.
Lawn regeneration after winter
After the first mowing, it is worth performing several treatments that will strengthen the grass and accelerate its regeneration. We then use spring fertilizer, rich in nitrogen, which will stimulate the grass to grow. We choose a slow -down preparation to avoid overwhelming. If there is a thick layer of felt on the lawn, it is worth carrying out a scarifying, i.e. vertical cutting of turf to remove dead grass and organic residues. Aeration, i.e. plunging the lawn, improves the access of air, water and nutrients to the grass roots. If there are empty squares on the lawn, we spare grass seeds. We choose a mixture of seeds that is resistant to diseases and adapted to the conditions on our lawn. After fertilization and light, water the lawn. We keep the soil slightly moist but not wet.
