Do you have a boiler for water heating at home and do you use it for heating? Wondering if it pays to turn it off for the night to save? Let’s see with us how it really is with energy and money saving in such a mode.
You may think that when you go to bed and is warm enough at home, there is no reason to have a boiler running. If you have good insulation and windows, the temperature should remain pleasant for several hours after you go to sleep. And if you don’t use warm water overnight, why leave it on? It’s even easier in summer. The boiler does not have to be turned on at all. But what about the winter when you need to heat? It may happen that the boiler warms water at night during your cycle, even if you are not using it. So is it really advantageous to turn off the boiler for the night, or is it more unnecessary investigation that will save you only a few crowns? Let’s take a closer look at it.
How is it with saving when shutting down the boiler
There are several reasons why it may seem that turning off the boiler for the night is a good idea. If you do not turn the boiler, you do not consume any gas and therefore do not pay for energy. This makes sense, especially if you do not use warm water during the night. But before you decide to turn off the boiler completely, it is good to consider several other factors.
First, how well is your house insulated? If you have quality insulation, triple glazing windows and well sealed doors, the temperature in the house should withstand stable hours after you go to sleep. In this case, the boiler turning off can make sense. However, if the insulation is missing, the house can cool quickly and the temperature drops even below 10 ° C. This can lead to moistening walls, which means not only a greater heat leak, but also possible damage to the house construction. In extreme cases, you can even freeze pipes, which could be much more expensive.
It is also necessary to take into account the costs of re -heating the house in the morning. If the temperature drops below 10 ° C, the boiler will have to work much more intensively to heat your house back to a comfortable 18-20 ° C. If the boiler was turned on at a lower temperature (for example 15 ° C), it would not have to work so much in the morning. In this way, the total gas savings may be less than you may think, because you will need more energy to warm up.
What are the alternatives
There are several alternatives to save energy without switching off the boiler completely. One option is to set the thermostat to a lower temperature, for example to 12–14 ° C. This temperature usually does not start heating, but in the case of very cold nights it will function as a frost protection. This allows you to save, while protecting your home from risks such as moisture or frozen pipes.
Another option is to use the boiler timer. Most modern boilers have a timer that allows you to set specific on and shutdown times. You can set up to turn the boiler off at 23 hours and turn it back at 7 am. This method gives you more control over energy consumption and prevents the boiler from running when it really is not needed.
Therefore, in terms of energy saving, the best choice may be a combination of thermostat to a lower temperature and timers. In this way, you will ensure that the household temperature does not fall below critical value, but at the same time avoid unnecessary operation of the boiler during the night.
