Japanese negotiator travels to Washington in search of "fast" agreement

The 24% surcharge imposed by the US head of state on Japanese products has been suspended for 90 days, but the pause is temporary, and the minimum rate of 10% remains in force in force in force

The Japanese minister responsible for commercial negotiations with the United States appealed on Monday that the customs difference will be resolved “as soon as possible”, stressing that the profits of Japanese companies are decreasing “day after day.”

Economic Revitalization Minister Ryosi Akazawa will travel to Washington this week to negotiations, according to information from Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to the Japanese Parliament.

“With certain customs rights already in force, the profits of Japanese companies are decreasing day by day,” Akazawa told Parliament.

“The sooner [a questão for resolvida]better, ”he added.

During the visit, Akazawa will request a review of all customs measures adopted by the US Administration of President Donald Trump.

The 24% surcharge imposed by the US head of state on Japanese products has been suspended for 90 days, but the pause is temporary, and the minimum rate of 10% remains in force.

In addition, Japan has not been able to get exemptions from 25% overflows on the automotive, steel and aluminum sectors, in force for several weeks for all US trading partners.

“I will do my best, taking into account the national interest and the effectiveness of our action,” said Akazawa.

According to the Japanese media, citing government sources, the minister should meet with the US Secretary of Treasury Scott Bessent and US commercial representative Jamieson Greer on Wednesday.

In an interview with Japanese daily Yomiuri, published today, Akazawa insisted on the importance of Tokyo understanding what the United States effectively intends to its trade policy.

“We have to pass our message: we have serious concerns about the compliance with these measures with the World Trade Organization agreements and the bilateral trade agreement between Japan and the United States,” he said, echoing words from Japanese Minister of Commerce.

Japanese companies are among the largest investors in the United States. Last year, motor vehicles accounted for about 28% of Japan’s 132 billion euros for the US market.

Akazawa also indicated that he is ready to discuss a contribution to the development of infrastructure to exploit liquefied natural gas deposits (LNG) in Alaska if the matter is raised by the United States, according to Yomiuri.

Donald Trump said in March that Japan and South Korea are among countries interested in working with the United States on an Alaska LNG pipeline project.
