China says that “it will resist protectionism” and will bet on strengthening ties with the global south
China expressed its “trust” on Tuesday in strengthening its foreign trade and “resisting protectionism” in full tariff war with the United States, which has imposed 145% of total taxes on Chinese imports while Beijing has raised its own on US products up to 125%.
“China maintains its commitment to open, it has a market with opportunities for the rest of the world. We will continue to eliminate barriers and bet on connectivity against decoupling,” said spokesman Lin Jian at a press conference.
The spokesman added that “China’s high level opening” will offer “stability and positivity to the world economy” as opposed to “predators and intimidatories of the United States”, especially in the global south.
“We will maintain solidarity with the global south. Our cooperation is based on the rules of the market and not only benefits the peoples of these countries but also helps transform their economy,” said the spokesman. Lin added that despite the “uncertainties”, China will continue to “hold her hand instead of throwing blows”, referring to Washington.
The value called yuan of commercial exchanges between China and the rest of the world grew 1.3% during the first three months of 2025, according to official data published Monday by the General Administration of Customs of the Asian country. Exports grew 6.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, while imports were reduced by 6%. Trade with the United States registered a 4% year -on -year increase in the first quarter of 2025, a period in which the two largest economies in the world have already imposed mutually tariffs. However, numerous experts predict that trade between China and the United States will be significantly reduced in the second quarter of the year, in which they have entered into force mutual levies greater than 100% between the two powers.
In the midst of the commercial war between the two countries, the Chinese media have restored importance to the US dependence, highlighting the growing weight of emerging economies, especially the Association of Nations of Southeast Asia (ASEAN), the main commercial partner of the Asian giant. Local authorities of China recently implemented policies oriented to stabilize foreign trade and increase the proportion of exports aimed at emerging markets. (EFE)
