The European Union and the US have a 90-day “window” to resolve trade disputes. Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič stressed the need for a joint effort to achieve zero duties for industrial goods.
The European Union (EU) remains constructive and ready for a fair customs agreement with the United States, including reciprocity in the form of zero duties’ determination for industrial goods. This was stated on Monday evening by the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič after negotiations with his American partners in Washington, informs Brussels Rapporteur TASR.
On Monday, Šefčovič continued on the name of the European Commission (EC) with the third series of personal negotiations on business policy between the EU and the US in an effort to prevent the mutual spiral of the imposition of duties and the commercial war.
Reciprocal duties
The Slovak Commissioner on Social Network X confirmed that he had met American trade minister Howard Lutnicka and the top representative of US President Donald Trump for Trade Jamieson Greer in Washington, and the main topic of the negotiations was the best use of the 90-day “window” to introduce reciprocal duties. In his words, the EU considers duties to be unauthorized.
On the day of Šefčovič’s working visit to the US, the European Commission confirmed that the application of retaliatory import duties to US goods for 90 days – until 14 July.
Retaliation
They published the announcement four days after the chairman of EC Ursula von Der Leyen announced that Brussels had postponed retaliatory duties to US products in response to the same step of US President Donald Trump. He decided to suspend the reciprocal duties for 90 days last week.
“The EU remains a constructive partner prepared for a fair agreement, including reciprocity through our customs offer zero for zero customs tariffs for industrial goods and work to reduce non -adications,” Šefčovič said after the negotiations. He stressed that achieving this goal would require a “considerable joint effort” on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
Repeated visit
This was the third visit to Šefčovič in Washington aimed at addressing the disputed customs issues. He first met Lutnicka and Greer on February 20, and for the second time at the end of March and last Friday (April 11) led with both partners more than a two -hour video call aimed at the question of customs and mutual trade.
