NATO is concerned about the possibility that Russia soon deploying nuclear weapons in space. This was stated by the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance, Mark Rutte, in an interview granted to the newspaper Welt am Sonntagas reported.
“We have knowledge of reports that indicate that Russia is exploring the possibility of placing nuclear weapons in space,” he said. Rutte also pointed out that Russia’s capabilities in space are “obsolete” and are not at the western level, so the development of nuclear weapons in space would be a way that Russia improves its abilities, admitting that this is very worrying.
These so -called antisatellite weapons are not directed against the earth, but against satellites, said Routte, who stressed that knocking down satellites could cause chaos on earth, since many terrestrial systems can only be used with the help of satellites.
Rutte warned against the breach of the Treaty of the Ultra -Site Space of 1967, which stipulates the peaceful use of space. The treaty has been ratified by most states, including Russia and the United States.
In recent years, space has become increasingly crowded, dangerous and unpredictable, since spatial competition is fierce and increasingly fierce. And not only in commercial terms. This, Routte declared, affects our general security.
