List highlights cases of detainees who have ‘vulnerabilities’, who have small children under their responsibility or are in degrading conditions in the Brazilian prison system
Last Monday (14), opposition deputies in took a significant initiative when requesting the minister of Alexandre de Moraes, the granting of house arrest for prisoners of the day that are vulnerable. The request was based on a list composed of 20 names, prepared by the Association of Family and Victims of 8 January (ASPAV). This list highlights cases of detainees facing precarious health conditions, have small children under their responsibility or are in degrading conditions in the Brazilian prison system.
The document delivered to Minister Alexandre de Moraes emphasizes the need to review cases for humanitarian reasons. He cites international standards that Brazil could adopt, such as humanized treatment for women arrested with children and the use of alternative penalties to prison, according to Tokyo rules. One of the most alarming cases highlighted is that of Cleriston Pereira da Cunha, who died in prison despite having a favorable opinion from the Federal Prosecutor to serve house arrest due to health problems.
The list includes names of prisoners over 60 and diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, severe depression and epilepsy. In addition, there are detainees who have small children and face serious psychological problems. The opposition, led by deputies of the Liberal Party, such as Deputy Zucco, eagerly awaits the response of Minister Alexandre de Moraes about the possibility of house arrest or alternative measures for these detainees. To reinforce the importance and urgency of the request, a special commission in the House of Representatives was created to analyze the cases of prisoners on January 8.
