The new Syrian President Ahmad Šara begins diplomatic activities by visiting Qatar, which supports the restoration of infrastructure and the abolition of sanctions.

The temporary Syrian President Ahmad Šara traveled on Tuesday to his first official visit to Qatar, a key ally of his administration after the long -standing ruler of Bashar Assad. The Minister of Foreign Affairs Asad Hasan Šajbání informed about it, TASR writes according to AFP report.

“Today we accompany the President (…) at his first presidential visit to the country, which stood at Syrians from the first day and never left them,” said the Minister on the social network X. The paper added a photo of the Syrian and Qatar flag.

Šara is the leader of the Islamist group Hajat Tahrír Ash (HTS), who was at the forefront of Assad’s overthrow on December 8, 2024. The Syrian authorities are currently trying to gain help to restore the country after almost 14 years of civil war.

Qatar, as one of the first Arab countries, supported the uprising last year. Unlike other Arab states, he has never renewed diplomatic relations with Syria during the Assad government, recalls AFP.

In January, the Damascus Emir visited Bin Hamad Oán Sáni as the first head of a foreign state after the long -term Assad regime. Qatar promised to support the restoration of Syrian infrastructure and announced the supply of electricity at the beginning of the year.

Qatar, as the second country after Turkey, reopened its embassy in Damascus after Assad’s fall and at the same time called on the abolition of international sanctions.
