The first step in the sanctification of the modernist architect of the Sagrada Familia Temple (Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia -the purifying church of the Holy Family is its full name -SS), approved by today.
Gaudi was a religious man who worked for more than 40 years for Sagrada Familia, the largest Roman Catholic Church in the world, UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s most imposing tourist attractions.
Pontiff approved a decree recognizing Gaudi’s “heroic virtues”, the Vatican said in a statement. The next step in the process of sanctification is to give it a miracle to be sophisticated. After that, a second miracle would need to be proclaimed Saint.
The construction of Sagrada Familia began in 1882, but the work, known for its towering Gothic peaks, remains unfinished, despite the fact that Gaudy has dedicated the last 12 years of his life exclusively to this flagship work.
The project was to be completed by 2026, the centenary of Gaudi’s death, which the Vatican’s media, Vatican News, called “the architect of God”.
However, this date, as a target, was postponed indefinitely, following the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced the tourist revenue intended for funding.
