Keep an eye on what should be disconnected from the socket
Do you know that smell of rain, thunder stubbornly in the distance and the sky darkening out of nowhere? Yeah, classic scene in Brazil. But while some run to make a coffee and others to post dramatic sky stories, it has a silent group suffering imminent risk: its appliances.
During lightning storms, the power grid can become a true amusement park for electricity. And guess who pays the bill? That’s right, your dear devices – from the warrior refrigerator to the notebook.
You must turn off these appliances during storms with lightning
Have you ever stopped to think that a single radius can carry millions of volts? It is enough energy to fry not only a fuse, but also its patience (and the pocket).
When this type of discharge reaches the power grid, the result can be a wave of tension peaks-those electric outbreaks that leave your devices as lost as you in a rainy Monday without coffee.
In addition to giving crashes on time, these peaks can also cause a “domino effect” and reduce the life of the appliances, as if they were aging ten years with each thunder. Tragic, right?
You don’t have to turn off the whole world, but there are some devices that deserve special attention when the sky begins to “freak out”:
- TVs: Especially those that still use external antenna. Rays love a unsuspecting anten. Turn off and take off the outlet. And if you can, use a special outbreak protector for antennas.
- Computers and notebooks: Even with line filters, you can’t trust it. Save your important cloud files and disconnect everything. The internet that fights later.
- Large appliances: Refrigerator, washing machine, microwave… These big guys can also be victims. If possible, turn off and invest in a good voltage stabilizer.
During an electric storm, in addition to disconnecting the devices, you can take other care that make all the difference:
Avoid using taps and showers: Yes, water conducts electricity. If the electrical installation is not 100% protected, better postpone the relaxing bath.
Stay away from windows and balconies: It’s not time to contemplate the universe – heavy curtains help protect against shrapnel in case of lightning impact.
Have an emergency kit: lanterns, batteries, radio, portable… All of this can save the day (or night).
It may seem exaggeration, but disconnecting appliances is a simple gesture that avoids gigantic damage. A new microwave may seem cheap, but what about 60-inch TV you bought at Black Friday? Better to guarantee, right?
