Burned area in Brazil falls 70% in the 1st quarter, says Mapbiomas

In March, the Amazon was the most affected biome, with 55,172 hectares devastated by fire

The area burned in Brazil in the 1st quarter of 2025 was 69.57% lower than in the same period last year. This Wednesday (16.br.2025) by the fire monitor of Mapbiomas, indicate that 912,876 thousand hectares were devastated by fire in the first 3 months of this year, compared to 3 million hectares from January to March 2024.

The number is the 4th worst result for the 1st quarter since the beginning of the historical series, in 2019. Here Data (PDF – 4 MB).

Last month, Roraima was the state that concentrated most of the territory impacted by fire. In all, there were more than 37,362 hectares. Following, Minas Gerais and Pará appear.

This is the amount of hectares burned in each Brazilian biome:

  • Amazonian – 55.172;
  • Cerrado – 37.837;
  • Atlantic Forest – 9.262;
  • Caatinga – 2.294;
  • Pampa – 1.514;
  • Pantanal – 562.

Fires

Brazil a 56.8% drop from the same period last year, when 5,448 occurrences of the type were recorded. The data is from the system do (National Institute for Space Research).

The Amazon concentrates the largest portion of the fire outbreaks, with 772 – or 32.8%. The Cerrado had the 2nd largest number, with 691 outbreaks –29.3% of the total.

Mato Grosso was the state with the largest number of burning, with 429 outbreaks registered in the last month. It is followed by Roraima (390) and Bahia (342).
