DECO Support Requests for Rental Difficulties rising 67%

The number of requests for help due to difficulty paying income increased in the first quarter 67% compared to the same period last year, indicates Deco, which received more than 300 requests by the end of March.

The Diário de Notícias writes this Wednesday that the Portuguese Association for Consumer Protection (DECO) registered a “significant increase in contacts” by the end of March and that there are already people to reduce the expenses in food to be able to pay the house.

At issue are families who cannot comply with the payment of the monthly installment of home income, the association that classifies the scenario as a “despair” for aggregates who saw subsidies from extraordinary support to cut or reduced income or awaiting a response from Porta 65 program.

According to the newspaper, compared to 2023, 87,000 taxpayers lost support for income.

In early February, 46,000 people saw this subsidy suppressed without any notice, due to failures or incongruities in the statements due to the Tax Authority (AT), he said.

Deco points out that this support, which can reach 200 euros per month and is automatically assigned by crossing the data provided by entities such as the Tax Authority or Social Security, is vital to ensure compliance with obligations for thousands of tenants.

“There are those who are truly desperate and do not know how they will now be able to pay the incomes,” says the coordinator of the Financial Protection Office, Natália Nunes.

“It is in food that families will then reduce to be able to pay the incomes. Many come into situations of delay or non -compliance,” he says, adding that debt is another of the roads that continues to gain scale: “These people end up resorting to credit card or personal credits to get money to pay the income.”
