A motorcyclist who performed the maneuver known as the “degree” collided with a car on a road of Linhares, Espírito Santo. Although the impact was considerable, those involved did not suffer serious injuries. In addition, none of them called the police or the emergency service, which caught the attention of local residents.

After the fright came the improvisation: hit in the middle of the street
According to witness reports, the accident generated only a short moment of tension. Then the parties involved remained on site for about 30 minutes. During this period, the motorcyclist’s family members arrived and, as the merchant José Ademir Largura said, everyone talked peacefully. “They solved right there, it seems that they entered a deal,” he said. That is, despite the risk and the collision, no one sought to formalize what happened.
The degree as a symbol of freedom or recklessness?
On the one hand, the practice of “degree” has grown among young motorcyclists, driven by social networks and a feeling of freedom. However, from a legal point of view, the maneuver is considered a very serious infraction by the Brazilian Traffic Code. Still, many do it on public roads, without any concern about the consequences. According to the Brazilian Association of Traffic Medicine (Abramet), about 12,000 motorcyclists die each year in Brazil – many of them involved in risk actions like this.
When it does not register, the problem disappears?
In practice, accidents without official registration do not enter the statistics. This means that the state fails to recognize the problem. In addition, without occurrence reports or technical expertise, the authorities are unable to propose effective solutions. Thus, the cycle repeats itself: negligence becomes a norm, and prevention is in the background. Meanwhile, the streets are still the scene of recklessness, and informal agreements replace institutional action.
