Trump’s administration transferred 445 square kilometers of federal land to the army to strengthen the protection of borders against illegal migration and trafficking in human beings.
US President Donald Trump’s administration has transferred more than 445 square kilometers of federal land along the US-Mexican border to the army. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the government wants to fight against illegal migration, TASR reports according to Wednesday’s report Reuters.
The agency said it was part of the extensive Trump measures against illegal migration. In January, the President declared the national state of emergency for illegal immigration and commissioned the US army to help protect the borders.
According to the Ministry, the land will be transferred for three years, which will allow federal employees to perform patrols there and build an infrastructure to prevent the transitions of illegal migrants.
This step is also intended to help prevent trading with people and drugs, but also to contribute to the protection of environmentally important areas that can be damaged by people’s movement, the ministry added.
“Securing our borders and protecting national resources are hand in hand,” said Interior Minister Doug Burgum. “The American people gave President Trump a mandate to make America safe and strong again,” he said.
