Understand

The government again demanded visa of tourists from the United States, Australia and Canada on Thursday (10.abr). The measure was effective after President Lula decided not to renew the exemption of visa of citizens from these countries, revoking the previous decision of the Government (PL).

According to the (Foreign Ministry), the decision was taken in May 2023 based on the principle of reciprocity. The measure is justified because the 3 countries mentioned do not offer exemption from visas to Brazilian nationals and “Brazil does not grant unilateral exemption from visa visas”.

The rule should come into force on October 1, 2023, but was postponed 3 times: to January 10, 2024, then to April 10, 2024 and, finally, to April 10, 2025.

The requirement still faces opposition in. On March 19, the Senate approved a Legislative Decree bill that attempts to nullify the government’s decision, but the proposal still needs to be analyzed and approved by the House of Representatives.

During the vote on, the government had little resistance. Only the governing leaders in Congress, (PT-AP), and Senate, (PT-BA), spoke against. The proposal was approved by symbolic vote. Planalto allies state that the amount charged by visa is low and should not dismiss tourists.
