The duties will be challenged in courts, announced by the governor of this state, Gavin Newsom.
In a video posted on the X platform, the Democratic Governor denounced the “unilateral power claimed by the Trump government to impose the largest tax increase in modern US history”.
Donald Trump does not have the authority to unilaterally impose the largest tax hike of our lifetime with his destructive tariffs.
We’re taking him to court.

According to many US media, Newsom will appeal to the courts on the grounds that the law cited by President Trump to impose duties does not allow him to do so unilaterally for the US imported goods, without Congress’s consent.
California alone is the fifth economy in the world. It is therefore at the forefront of the trade war that Trump started.
“California is the largest industrial state (of the US), one of the largest commercial partners in the world. No other state will be more affected, “Newsom insisted.
In early April, the commander had already announced that California would seek to conclude agreements with the rest of the world to exclude retaliation against the US.
As it is the most populous state, with 39 million inhabitants, California produces 14% of the country’s GDP. It is the cradle of the technology sector and the largest producer of industrial and agricultural products in the US. However, it depends largely on its relations with Mexico, Canada and China, three countries most affected by the duties after Trump’s return to the White House.
Following the devastating fires of January in Los Angeles, California also fears that new duties will make the city’s rebuilding difficult to rebuild as imported building materials such as timber, steel, aluminum, gypsum, will be expensive.
