The Government of Colombia declared health emergency for yellow fever. According to the country’s Minister of Health, Guillermo Afonso Jaramillo, the cases of the disease have been registered in the region since September last year. Throughout this year, he said, despite efforts to contain the infections, the scenario has gotten worse.

“In all, we have 74 confirmed cases and 34 deceased. It is a disease with mortality of about 50% in infected people,” said Jaramillo, in a video where he declares the sanitary emergency situation. According to him, health teams visit risk areas and pass from home to house to immunize the population.

In social network X, the folder asks the entire population to be able to be vaccinated against yellow fever, in order to avoid complications of the disease. The age group to receive the dose has been expanded in the country and, in regions considered at higher risk for the disease, children from 9 months can be immunized.

The disease

Yellow fever is an acute, immunoprevenable febrile infectious disease of abrupt evolution and variable severity, with high lethality in its severe forms. Caused by a mosquito -transmitted virus, it has two transmission cycles (urban and wild).

In the urban cycle, transmission occurs from infected urban vectors (Aedes aegypti). In the wild cycle, transmitters are mosquitoes with predominantly wild habits, being the most important Haemagogus genres.

In the wild cycle, non-human primates are considered the main hosts, amplifiers of the virus and are victims of the disease as well as the human being who, in this cycle, presents itself as an accidental host.

The initial symptoms of yellow fever include sudden onset of fever; Body pain in general; chills; nausea and vomiting; Intense headache; fatigue; back pain; and weakness.

Most people improve after these initial symptoms. However, about 15% have a brief period of hours a day without symptoms and then develop a more serious form of the disease.
