Federal Deputy Duda Salabert (PDT-MG) said on Wednesday (16) that had the entry visa in the United States issued with the male marker, even after presenting Brazilian official documents that recognize their female gender.

In a social networking publication, Salabert reported that he had been invited to participate in an early childhood development course in partnership with Harvard University. At the time of the renewal of the overdue visa, it was informed by the US authorities that the new document would bring gender designation as “masculine”, under the justification that its gender identity is “public knowledge”.

“My gender identity, legally recognized by the Brazilian state, would be simply ignored. This is more than transphobia: it is a disrespect for Brazil’s sovereignty and the most basic human rights,” the parliamentarian wrote.

The deputy said she was in. According to her, the goal is to ensure that gender identity recognized in official documents, such as her birth certificate and passport, is respected internationally.

Salabert also expressed solidarity with colleague Erika Hilton, who faced similar situation when trying to travel to the US to attend an event at Harvard Brazil Conference. Both are part of the Congress Trans Bench and report that the Trump government policy promotes exclusion and setbacks in the rights of LGBTQIA+persons.

“This decision of the US government is, bluntly, discriminatory,” concluded Salabert.
