Grêmio announced on Wednesday (16) the resignation of the Argentine-Bolivian coach Gustavo Quinteros, after the 4-1 defeat against Mirassol, for the fourth round of the Brazilian Championship.
“Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense communicates the closure of the work of coach Gustavo Quinteros in Tricolor. Along with the professional, they also leave the club their assistants,” the club said in a brief statement.
Quinteros, 60, had been announced by Grêmio at the end of last year, after a successful passage by Argentina Vélez Sarsfield, with which he won the national championship and was finalist of the Argentine Cup the year before.
At Tricolor Gaucho, where he replaced idol Renato Portaluppi, could not repeat the good football presented at Vélez.
After a promising start in the Gaucho Championship against modest teams, Grêmio failed to beat Internacional or Youth, both from Serie A, and had difficulty overcoming the modest São Raimundo de Roraima and Athletic of São João Del-Rei in the Brazilian Cup, advancing only on penalties.
Despite being qualified for the regional tournament final, the defeat for the international rival left Quinteros very pressured. In Brasileirão, he debuted with victory at home about Atlético Mineiro (2 to 1), but then lost to Ceará (2 to 0), Flamengo (2 to 0) and to the rookie Mirassol (4 to 1).
The victories against the modest Sportivo Luqueño (2-1) and Atletico Grau (2-0) at the South American Cup were not enough to convince the crowd and the Gremista Board.
The bad results and the expected performance put Quinteros on the tightrope, and his resignation was confirmed after the rout suffered in Mirassol.
The former coach of Bolivia and Ecuador teams leaves the Brazilian club after 19 matches, with 9 wins, 5 draws and 5 losses.
