The president of the United States, Donald Trump on Thursday requested the dismissal of the president of the Federal Reserve (Fed) of the country, Jerome Powell and called his reports “complete disaster”, while claiming a cut of interest rates.
“Jerome Powell should have dropped interest rates, such as the ECB, a long time ago, but I should undoubtedly lower them now. Powell’s dismissal cannot wait!” Trump said in a message on his social network Truth.
“The ECB (European Central Bank) is expected to cut interest rates for the seventh time, and yet Jerome Powell, of the Federal Reserve, who always arrives too late and is wrong, yesterday issued a report that was another, typical and complete disaster,” Trump said.
“Petroleum prices have dropped, food (even eggs!) Have come down, and the US is enriching with tariffs,” said the US president.
Powell has insisted in the last weeks that it is necessary that American inflation, which stood at 2.4 % in March – above the objective of the Fed of 2 % – shows a more consistent slowdown to continue lowering the rates, which are currently located in a fork between 4.25 % and 4.5 %.
And yesterday he indicated that the data available to the agency at the moment suggest that the solid growth of 2024 has slowed into the first quarter, figures that coincide with a context marked by the commercial war opened by Trump.
The European Central Bank (ECB) is expected to go on Thursday the interest rates in a percentage quarter, from 2.5, to 2.25 %, taking into account that the commercial war of the US president, Donald Trump, will reduce the already weak growth of the region.
