Venice again applies tourist fee (and will cost twice for last -minute escapes)

Italian city hit last year a new record of visitors, with over 3.9 million people staying overnight in the historic center

Venice will again apply a tourist rate to all who want to visit the city. The measure comes into force this Friday and aims to control the number of tourists, which has been increasing year after year.

According to the tourist rate will cost five euros, but it doubles (costing 10 euros) if purchased within three days prior to arrival in the city. In addition, the newspaper continues, the number of days on which this rate applies to 54 (almost double the number of days last year), mostly on weekends, between April 18 and July 27. The fee can be and, made the payment, visitors receive a QR code that will have to present at the city’s entrance points, as is the case of the Venezia Santa Lucia railway station.

But there are exceptions. Those who reserve a stay staying overnight in Venice is exempt from the payment of the fee, as well as tourists from the veneto region and children under 14. However, any city visitor, even those who are excluded from payment, have to register their presence on the site, so that they can visit certain spaces and attractions, under the penalty of paying fines.

The site shows that more than 35,000 visits to the city have been reserved, not advancing, but which implied the payment of the fee.

Even with the application of a tourist fee, the Italian city beat last year a new record of visitors, with over 3.9 million people staying overnight in the historic center. Still, the measure yielded 2.4 million euros to the coffers of Venice.
