When spring woke up, gardeners begin with a new life. They are rushing to plant the first plants into the garden. One is the onion. Although onions are one of the most demanding vegetables, it is important to follow certain rules in their care. Not all types of fertilizer are suitable for this plant – in some cases onion fertilization can harm more than help. In this article, we will discuss why onions cannot be fertilized with certain materials, how it affects their growth and what should be chosen instead. If you want to grow healthy and fragrant, be sure to pay attention to the specialist recommendations.
Organic fertilizer
Of course, onions need organic fertilizer humus or manure. They make the soil fertile and help to yield abundant yields. But they need to be made in advance, preferably for a couple of months (but can also be 20-30 days) before planting. Organic fertilizers take time to split and become mineral. Otherwise, the onion will lack phosphorus, potassium and other useful trace elements. In addition, small onion tubers will be formed that will be bad.
Nitrogen and ammonia
Experienced gardeners know that onions like nitrogen. However, too much nitrogen fertilizer is not recommended, otherwise the vegetable will lose its characteristic taste. There is no need to use ammonia at all. This unnatural remedy for watering can burn the roots and the bulb itself.
Nettle and yeast
Basically, the root vegetables do not need to be fertilized with yeast and nettle. Let’s find out why. Yeast is used to improve soil with microorganisms. However, these microorganisms themselves need a nutrient medium. This means that the yeast will only impoverish the soil instead of placing the onions to grow. And nettle is a leaf growth stimulant. It will be harmful to the formation of the underground part of the bulb. Therefore, the nettle is completely unsuitable for root vegetables.
Fertilize the onions in moderation and get a great harvest!
