China is about to open the Huajiang Grand Canyon bridge, which will become the highest bridge in the world, located in the province of Guizhou, in the southwest of the country.
With a height of 625 meters above the river level, the new structure will be almost 300 meters higher than the Millau viaduct in France, which held the previous record with 343 meters.
The conclusion of the construction is scheduled for June 2025.
The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is a bridge suspended from steel truss with a total length of 2,890 meters. The bridge trusses weigh about 22,000 tons, the equivalent of three Towers Eiffel.
The construction began in January 2022 and took three and a half years to complete, with 95% of the construction already completed.
The bridge must have a significant impact on the mobility of the region. Currently, the gorge crossing takes about an hour, made by winding roads. With the new bridge, this time should be reduced to approximately one minute, facilitating transport between cities and helping business to reduce logistics costs.
