The president of COP30, André Correa do Lago, said on Friday (18) that China is developing ambitious climate goals and should announce them in the coming months, despite the recent departure from the United States from international procedure. The statement was made after a week of meetings with Chinese authorities in Beijing.

According to Lago, national emission reduction commitments – known as NDCs – should be presented soon and will be valid until 2035. China and other countries have lost the time of February to send the documents. “We believe China is preparing nationally certain very ambitious contributions,” said Lago.

China is expected to take protagonism at COP30, which will be held in November in Belém-PA. The US absence in negotiations, after President Donald Trump’s decision to remove the country from the climate agreement, reinforces the importance of cooperation among other powers. “Brazil and China want to defend multilateral systems, whether in commerce, climate change or any other area,” Lago said at a press conference at the Brazilian embassy in Beijing.

During the visit, the president of COP30 met with representatives of the Ministries of the Environment and Foreign Affairs of China. Despite the challenges faced by the country to reduce the dependence on coal, Lago praised the advances in clean technology, such as electric vehicles and solar energy. He pointed out that coal consumption fell significantly in the first quarter of 2025.

“Each country needs to analyze its energy transition considering economic stability and possible growth,” said Lago. He stressed that the adoption of new technologies and policies can accelerate the transition and generate positive results.
