The news was announced by the former club, Rochdale, who revealed that Thompson passed away at home, next to his family. Manchester United also reacted.

After training in the English giant, Joe Thompson acted in lower level clubs, representing clubs such as Rovdale, Tranmere Rovers, Bury, Southport, Carlisle United and Blyth Spartans. He was also a sports commentator on television.
