The suspect “intended to carry out a terrorist action in Italy in the near future”
The Italian anti-terrorism police announced Friday the arrest of a tunisine citizen suspected of calling the Islamic State Group (IS) and that, according to the authorities, planned an attack in Italy.
The man, resident in Cosenza, Calabria (southern Italy), was sought by Tunisia “for involvement in terrorist activities,” the Italian police said in a statement.
The suspect “intended to carry out a terrorist action in Italy in the near future” and claimed to be a salaPho, an ultra -conservative Sunni movement that aims to establish a society under the rule of Islamic law.
Police surveillance revealed “the existence and activity of a criminal structure designed to commit terrorist acts,” according to the press release.
The group “got involved in proselytizing and indoctrination activities” as well as military-style training.
The Italian police, who are conducting a judicial investigation, also indicated that the suspect was in possession of attacks and war, extremist propaganda and documents that explained how to manufacture explosives and weapons.
