GAUDÍ
Pope Francis approved, also on Monday (14.br.2025), a decree that begins the canonization of Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí, known mainly by the Sagrada Familia, a basilica located in Barcelona, Spain.
With the Pope’s decision, the architect becomes “venerable”, After having“Heroic virtues”Recognized. The Vatican referred to him as“God’s architect”.
“The Pontiff recognized the heroic virtues of Antoni Gaudí, a known Spanish architect in the world for driving the work of building the Basilica of the Holy Family in Barcelona. The great exponent of Catalan modernism becomes venerable”Said the Vatican.
The next step towards beatification is the assignment of a miracle to the architect. If there is a 2nd miracle attributed to him and be recognized by the Church, Gaudí may be holy.
Gaudí has worked in the Holy Family for 40 years, being his last 12 years totally dedicated to her. It is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the largest unfinished Roman Catholic church in the world. The work was expected to be completed in 2026, centenary of his death.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the schedule and delayed the finalization of the church because of the cutting of tourism revenue, which finances the construction. Even so, with its high gothic and stained glass towers, it is one of the most visited sights in Europe.
In addition to the Basilica, the architect was also responsible for Casa Millà, the Crypt of the Güell colony and the Battló House, all in Barcelona.
