Rubio warns that if it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, the US has to “move on”

“We will not continue with this effort for weeks and months on end,” said the US Secretary of State

The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, says that if it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, the United States has to abandon its efforts and move on.

“If it is not possible to end the war in Ukraine, we have to move on,” he told reporters in Paris, explaining that Donald Trump will give up trying to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within days unless there are clear signs that an agreement can be made. “We will not continue with this effort for weeks and months on end. So we have to determine very quickly, and I am talking about a matter of days, whether or not it is possible to do this in the coming weeks. If it is, we are not, then we have other priorities where we should focus.

According to Reuters, Rubio said Trump was still interested in an agreement, but was willing to advance if there were no immediate signs of progress. “War is not ours. It was not us who started it. The United States have been helping Ukraine in the last three years and we want it to end, but it is not our war,” Rubio said.

“The President (Donald Trump) has spent 87 days repeatedly to make efforts to end this war. We are now coming to a point where we need to decide and determine if this is possible or not. That’s why we are involving both parties.”

Rubio, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff, met with European and Ukrainian employees on Thursday as part of Washington’s efforts attempts to mediate the end of the Russian war in Ukraine.
