The US government official website of the United States Government, once focused on the dissemination of public information about the pandemic, began to redirect users to a new page promoted by the Trump administration that defends the thesis that coronavirus originated in a laboratory in China. The change also affects the Covidtes.gov website, which previously allowed to request free tests.
The current content of the page has accusations that health officials and US intelligence agencies have suppressed theory for political reasons. The text also questions the performance of the World Health Organization (WHO) and claims that the Biden government tried to control the narrative about the pandemic.
The reformulation of the page includes links to official documents, such as the report of the House Supervision Committee, and direct mentions to public figures such as Dr. Anthony Faci, former governor Andrew Cuomo and the NGO Ecohealth Alliance. Accusations include from alleged obstruction of investigations to financing high -risk research in Wuhan with US public resources.
Continues after advertising
The new government stance occurs after the disclosure of a CIA report, which points to as in the conclusions. The agency stresses that both hypotheses – natural or accidental laboratory origin – remain plausible.
In response, the China embassy in the US stated: “We are firmly opted for politicization and stigmatization of the origin of the virus.”
The site modification is part of a broader offensive of Trump administration to change or remove content from federal pages considered ideologically divergent. Since February, websites such as climate change, racial equity and gender identity have also been targeted for change.
