From Diogo Morgado to Rodrigo Santoro: the actors who have already interpreted Jesus Christ in the Great Scree

From the early films of the Lumière brothers to the latest productions, the story of Christ continues to inspire various film, theatrical and animation adaptations.

Over the years Jesus Christ has been interpreted by dozens of actors. Many are practically unknown to the general public, but among the most notable names that have ever brought to the figure of Christ are Rodrigo Santoro, Christian Bale, Will Ferrell and Portuguese Diogo Morgado.

After starring the miniseries The BibleIn the role of Jesus, Diogo Morgado once again interpreted the “Son of God” in the film adaptation of the same project.

The film was one of the greatest successes to portray the life and mysteries of Jesus Christ – and, on social networks, the Portuguese actor was again “baptized” with the role.

The story of Christ, told in the New Testament, traveled almost two thousand years until he reached the cinema. One of the first cinematic records is Passionof the Lumière brothers, launched in 1898.

Since then, near a hundred actors have accepted the challenge of playing one of the most iconic figures in history. For many, it was a striking role that defined their careers.

This is the case of Jim Caviezel, known worldwide for his performance in The Passion of Christmade by Mel Gibson. During the filming, the American actor went through extreme situations: he was accidentally whipped, shifted a shoulder in one of the scenes, suffered hypothermia while on the cross and, in an unusual circumstance, was really hit by lightning. Caviezel states that these experiences approached him spiritually to God.

The story of Jesus continues to inspire recreations in the most varied formats. The musical Jesus Cristo Superstarfor example, was present in both theater and cinema.

More recently, animation The King of Kingscurrently on display in Portuguese movie theaters, offers a new approach to the biblical account. Based on a Charles Dickens manuscript, the film features Sounds by Diogo Infante and with Ricardo Pereira’s voice in the role of Jesus.
