Anvisa warns about risk of hair in babies exposed to Minoxidil

Parents should make sure that children do not have contact with places where the product has been applied

(National Health Surveillance Agency) An alert on the risk of abnormal hair growth, a condition known as hypertrichosis, in babies exposed to accidental contact with areas where Minoxidil was applied by their parents. Minoxidil is indicated for the treatment of androgen alopecia in adults. This is the note of Anvisa (PDF – 209 KB).

Cases of hypertrichosis in babies have been reported in European countries after skin contact with areas where Minoxidil was applied. The growth of the hair was normalized after a few months of the suspension of contact with the drug.

The agency requested the registration holders of these medicines that include the risk of hypertrichosis in babies after accidental exposure to Minoxidil.
