The president of the (Supreme Federal Court), countered by note on Saturday night (19) statements that judges of the highest Brazilian court have “excessive power”, highlighting the minister.

Report of the magazine recaps some episodes of Brazilian political history and attacks on democracy. In the text, the magazine criticizes Postures which it considers authoritarian by the members of the Supreme, defends moderation and cites the monocratic decisions of the ministers – those made individually, without the need for discussion with others.

Barroso says in the note that the focus of the report corresponds “more to the narrative of those who tried the coup d’état than the real fact that Brazil lives a full democracy.”

The president of the Supreme Court cited Datafolha survey that points out that the majority of Brazil’s population trust the STF (24% trust a lot and 35% trust a little).

Among the cases cited, he addressed the non -compliance with required rules by the company’s owner, Elon Musk.

“There is no crisis of confidence. The so-called individual or ‘monocratic’ decisions were later ratified by the other judges. OX (former Twitter) was suspended from Brazil because it had taken its legal representatives from the country, and not because of any published content. And as soon as it had a representative, it was restored,” the note says.

By mentioning the accusation of involvement in the 2022 coup plot, the Economist text says that the Supreme Court runs the risk of “reinforcing the perception that the court is more guided by politics than by law” due to previous bonds of ministers with President Lula (PT).

The newspaper refers to Cristiano Zanin, former lawyer of Lula, and Dias Toffoli, former chief of AGU (Attorney General of the Union) in the second term of the petista.

According to Economist, the Brazilian high cut acts autonomously and poorly controlled, in a context that would require greater balance between powers. The magazine argues that the Supreme Court has become a political protagonist into an incompatible degree with mature liberal democracies.

The text also accuses Barroso of saying in 2023 that the Supreme “defeated Bolsonaro”, which was denied by the president.

“The President of the Court never said that the Court ‘Defeated [derrotou] Bolsonaro ‘. It was the voters, “says Barroso in the note.

The Supreme Court president also used the note to defend Moraes and claim that the minister “fulfills with commitment and courage his role, with the support of the court, not individually.”

“Almost all court ministers have already been offended by the former president. If the alleged animosity in relation to him could be a criterion of suspicion, the defendant would be enough to attack the court so that he could not be tried,” he said.
