China’s ambassador in the United States, Xie Feng, has asked Washington to seek common ground with Beijing and promotes peaceful coexistence, while warning that China is ready to retaliate the climb of trade war.

Speaking of a public event in Washington on Saturday, whose details were published on the Chinese Embassy website, Xie said the tariffs would devastate the global economy and drew a parallel between the great depression and the US -imposed tariffs in 1930.

Referring to concepts of traditional Chinese medicine, such as the need to balance the opposite forces of Yin and Yang, Xie said that harmony should guide relationships between the two largest economies in the world.

“A good recipe for traditional Chinese medicine usually combines many different ingredients that reinforce each other and create the best medical effect,” he said.

“Similarly, the earth is large enough to accommodate both China and the US,” he said. “We must seek peaceful coexistence instead of colliding in front, and helping each other succeeding instead of attaching us to a loss scenario for both.”

The trade war has practically frozen the gigantic trade among the two largest economies in the world, with tariffs above 100% in each direction and a set of commercial, investment and cultural restrictions.
