The Brazilian athlete beat Chinese Lin Shidong in the World Cup final on Sunday (20.abr) in Macau

The president (PT) congratulated through his account at the X (former Twitter) to Hugo Calderano this Sunday (20.br.2025) for winning the World Table Tennis Championship in Macao, China.

The Brazilian athlete won from the Chinese Lin Shidong, the 1st place in the ranking worldwide, in 42 minutes. The victory was turned with partials of 6/11, 11/7, 11/9, 11/4 and 11/5, closing the 4-1 of Calderano.

“Very happy with the unpublished feat of Hugo Calderano in Macau, at the Table Tennis World Cup. In a tournament with 48 of the best international competitors, the Brazilian took a first time a player from the Americas to the decision and the title by winning”, wrote Lula.

Unpublished title

China is the largest power in world table tennis. The last time an athlete from another country won the title was in 2027. The Brazilian also became the 1st athlete in the Americas to take the tournament.

To get to the victory, Calderano passed the Japanese Tomokazu Harimoto, number 3 of the world, in the quarterfinals and Chinese Wang Chuqin, number 2 of the world, in the semifinal.

In an interview after the game, the tennist table recalled the difficult period at the Paris 2024 Olympics, when even arriving in the semifinal-a major result for the Americas in history-fell to Swedish Truls Möregårdh and then lost the bronze to Frenchman Felix Lebrun.

“This title is important especially after Paris. I think I always worked very hard. I kept believing myself, but if you talked to me a month ago, I was very down.”said the Brazilian. “I want to thank everyone for their support, support. I read all the messages, I don’t have time to answer everyone, but I’m grateful for the support.”
