Thai authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of a Chinese citizen, responsible for the company that was building a skyscraper in Bangkok that collapsed in the causing dozens of deaths.

The Department of Special Investigations, which depends on the Ministry of Justice, needed in a statement that one of the detained people is a “representative of a Chinese company named Zhang.

Associated with an Italo-Tailandian company in ‘Joint venture’, the China Railway Society No. 10 was in charge of building the tower designed to welcome state services.

Zhang holds 49% of the company’s shares, while the three Thai has a 51% stake.

“We have evidence (…) that the three Thai held the actions by other foreigners,” in violation of the law, said the Minister of Justice.

The law says no Thai society can be detained by foreigners by more than 49%.

Part of the metal used in construction was not according to the norms

In early April, the Thai authorities stated that tests carried out in the steel bars of the building structure revealed that a part of the metal used was not according to the rules.

China is the first source of foreign direct investment in Thailand, with two billion dollars injected into the kingdom in 2024.

On March 28, an earthquake of 7.7 magnitude on the Richter scale, with epicenter in Myanmar (former Burma) was felt in several Southeast Asia countries, including Thailand.
